When students know and understand the procedures within a classroom, everyone benefits. There are no surprises. The following include procedures for entering our classroom, being tardy, passes, asking questions, absences, homework, heading on assignments, class notes, quizzes and tests, and much more. These procedures will be reviewed and practiced during the first days of school. As new procedures are developed, they will be added to the list.
Procedures
Procedures
- Entering the classroom
- Please enter quietly
- Have a seat in your assigned seat
- Take out your materials (writing instrument, notebook, textbook)
- Review the objectives for the day’s lesson
- Begin working on the morning work
- Classroom Etiquette
- There is no eating in class unless you have a medical reason
- Water bottles are not permitted, unless you have a medical reason or due to excessive heat.
- Foul language will not be tolerated
- Electronics (cell phones, iPods, video games, etc.) must be off and out of sight
- Academic Etiquette
- Cheating will not be tolerated on any assignment or assessment. It will result in both parties receiving a zero on the assignment or assessment and a demerit and/or conference with their parents.
- Be an active learner (take notes, ask questions when confused, seek extra help when needed) - The more you participate, the more you will understand and learn
- Getting your Attention I will:
- Stand in the front of the class
- Signal to the class to be quiet
- Wait for everyone to look forward
- Begin speaking
- Class preparation
- Bring all materials to class with you each day
- Homework
- Textbook
- Notebooks
- Pencils (3), pens, highlighters, erasers, colored pencils, etc.
- Take all materials with you when you leave the class
- Moving around the room
- You must ask permission (For example, going to the bathroom, unless it is an emergency)
- Do not ask during the lesson unless it is an emergency
- If you need to use a tissue, quietly move to where the tissue box is kept (one person at a time).
- Dispose of the tissue in the nearest trash can. Tissues may not be supplied in all classrooms, therefore it would be to your advantage to have a small pack with you.
- Passes
- Passes will be given for the restroom or the nurse
- Passes will not be given during a lesson unless it is an emergency
- You may not leave the classroom without a pass
- One person at a time will be allowed out of the classroom with a pass
- Asking/Answering a question
- Please raise your hand to get my attention
- Please participate
- I want to hear what you have to say
- Make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion
- If your question is off the topic, write it down and ask it later
- Class Dismissal
- The teacher dismisses you, not the announcements
- Do not start packing up until I have asked you to do so
- You’ve been Pink Slipped!
- When you do not have your homework, you will be pink-slipped
- Fill it out
- Sign and date it
- Turn it in once completed
- What Do I Do Next? Activities
- Complete any unfinished writing assignments
- Complete the Word of the Week
- Read a book, magazine, posters around the room, etc.
- Help a friend with their assignment
- Working with a partner or in a cooperative group
- You are responsible for your own work
- You are to use the three-then-me rule. When you are stuck, before asking me, ask for help from three other students first
- You must try to help if you are asked for help
- You may ask for help from the teacher when the group agrees on the same question
- You must have a particular question, not simply "I don’t know what to do."
- Textbook
- Textbooks are the school's property
- You are responsible for your textbook - take care of it
- Should you lose the textbook, you will be charged $60 for a replacement
- Using computers
- We will be using virtual technology in class
- You are only allowed to go onto directed sites
- If you are caught playing games or using unauthorized sites, you will be in jeopardy of loosing computer privileges
- You are not to draw or misuse computers in any manner
- Pencil sharpening
- Students must come to class with three sharpened pencils
- All pencils should be sharpened immediately upon arriving to class
- No sharpening pencils while the teacher is teaching a lesson (thus the reason you have more than one sharpened pencil)
- Borrowing a pencil
- You may borrow a pencil only at the beginning of class
- Remember, the word "borrow" means the pencil will be returned
- All borrowed pencils must be returned at the end of class
- Heading a paper
- Name of Student
- Date
- Assignment
- I will not hunt down the owner of a paper without a name on it. No name = no credit for the assignment
- Homework
- Homework should be done in pencil and kept until I tell you that you can remove it from your notebook or folder
- If you don’t understand the assignment or the question, go back through the lesson in the text as well as your notes and try it again
- If you still have trouble with the problem, try your best to put down an answer that seems correct. Put a star, check, or some mark next to the problem(s) you had trouble with, so you know to pay close attention when we go over the homework and ask me for help if you still don't understand. Also, if you continue to be stumped, you may email me ([email protected]) with an explanation of the assignment you are having trouble with and what you have tried so far. Then, make sure I know when I am checking off the homework that you had a problem when you were doing the homework.
- ASK FOR HELP - I can't help you if I don't know that you are struggling. If you are embarrassed to ask in front of the class, talk to me when everyone else is independently working or distracted by another task. Also, you can write me a note and hand it to me, drop it on my desk, leave it on your desk so I see it when I walk by, or any other method that you can be sneaky. ;)
- At the start of class, set homework on your desk to be checked
- Sports, band, religious classes, going out to celebrate someone's birthday, etc. (anything you knew was scheduled and had the ability to prepare in advance for) DO NOT count as excuses for not having your homework completed on time. You are expected to do your homework before the event, after the event, or take it with you, if you will have some free time or the ability to work on it at the event.
- Exceptions will be made for religious holidays or circumstances beyond your control (ex. You went home, felt sick, and spent the night in bed or your little brother fell off his bike and you spent hours in the emergency room waiting for stitches.) Your parent should write me a note, send me an email, or leave me a message to explain the circumstances.
- Projects
- Unless otherwise directed, projects are done individually
- Students will be assessed using a rubric, which they will get when the project is assigned
- Each rubric will detail project requirements
- Projects will be worth up to 100 points each
- All projects will be announced well in advance
- Class Notes
- Each student is responsible for taking his/her own notes
- Notes are to be kept in student notebook and saved for later references (homework, quizzes and tests, and the final exam in June)
- Quizzes
- Unless otherwise directed, quizzes are taken individually
- Quizzes may or may not be announced
- Pencil will be used
- Tests
- Announced at least two days in advance
- If you are absent the day before a test, you are expected to take the test (assuming you knew in advance of the test and had the ability to review)
- Individually taken
- No notes may be used
- Tests will be worth 100 points each
- Pencil will be used
- Studying for tests
- After each class, go through your notes
- Redo the class problems
- Do all homework
- Ask questions in class
- Resources to use: notes, Practice Book pages, homeworks, Language Handbook pages, Harcourt Trophies website, Study Island, RAZ-Kids (helps with reading comprehension), any link I have on my webpage, your parents, siblings, friends, etc. :)
- Make-up Assignments or Assessments
- Upon returning to class after an absence, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.
- Copies of handouts may be obtained from the teacher.
- You will have one day for each day you are absent to make-up any assignments. Talk to me about special circumstances and we can work on an appropriate extension.
- You will have one week from the day you return to make up a test or quiz.
- Any work not completed in the time frame noted will receive a zero.
- Special Procedures
- These will be introduced on an as needed basis
- Library/Media Center
- Computer Lab
- Progress Reports and Report Cards - These are your business, your parents' business, and my business. There is no need to discuss your grades with anyone else, so don't feel pressured to do so.
- Fire Drill/Evacuation Drill - Exit the building quickly and quietly. No talking from the time the alarm sounds or the announcement is made until we re-enter the classroom. Demerits will be issued for inappropriate behavior or talking.
- Lockdown Drill - Move to the appropriate place in the classroom as quickly and quietly as possible. There will be no talking and all noises will be appropriately controlled for the duration of the lockdown. Appropriate discipline will be issued for inappropriate behavior during a lockdown.
- Intercom Announcements - No talking. We all need to know what the announcement is and whether there is an emergency.
- Assemblies - Behave in a respectful manner. Removal from the assembly and/or demerits may be issued.
- Substitute Teacher - He/She deserves the same respect I do. Misbehavior or disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. Appropriate discipline will be issued upon my return.
